I do not think being thoughtful and being geeky are opposites. Wonder is wonder, whether you are pondering purpose or placing your ten-thousandth block at three in the morning because the build needs it. Tip: flip the toggle to space mode and let the stars come out.

I love having a survival world, somewhere to return to like a garden. There is something deeply ikigai about it... small daily tasks, slow visible progress, a place that is only better because I keep showing up.

📘 Science fiction
Good sci-fi is philosophy. It asks the questions I circle in my essays, only with starships. What makes us human? What do we lose when the machines get clever? Sound familiar?
My comfort shelf, in no particular order... Peter F Hamilton for the epic, Asimov for the heart, Becky Chambers for the hope, Douglas Adams for the reminder not to take any of it too seriously. The answer is 42, after all, and the trick is remembering the question.
The best science fiction never really predicts the future. It holds up a mirror and asks if we are sure we want to keep walking this way.

And then there is always the Doctor. Two hearts, a blue box, a refusal to be cruel.
What I love is that the most powerful being in the universe chooses, again and again, to be kind. That curiosity beats conquest. That you can run towards the frightening thing with a daft grin and a sonic screwdriver and make it better. If that is not a clue for coping with AI, I do not know what is.

Other things that live rent-free in my head, woven in no particular order: Hermitcraft, Studio Ghibli, lego, dystopian books films and tv, so many geeky games, all the stationery, Red Dwarf, music on random shuffle, art, the Isle of Man on a clear day when you can see the whole sweep of the sea and the belief that the internet can still be an inspiring and human place.
